Can I Be My Own Registered Agent in Illinois?
Yes. Under 805 ILCS 180/1-35 and 805 ILCS 180/1-50, you can serve as your own registered agent if you are an individual residing in Illinois or a business entity authorized to transact business in the state. You must maintain a physical street address in Illinois where legal documents can be served. A P.O. box does not qualify.
Who Qualifies
You can serve as your own registered agent if you:
- Are an individual member or manager of the LLC and reside in Illinois
- Are a business entity authorized to conduct business in Illinois
There is no prohibition against self-service as registered agent for LLC members or corporate officers.
Address Requirements
Your registered agent address must be a physical street address in Illinois—not a P.O. box or virtual office. This address becomes public record and is where the Secretary of State will deliver official notices, lawsuits, and service of process documents. You must be able to receive documents at this location during business hours.
What This Means for You
Serving as your own registered agent means you personally receive all legal correspondence, regulatory notices, and service of process documents. You're responsible for promptly handling these materials and forwarding them to appropriate decision-makers within your company.
Consider whether you want your home or business address publicly listed and whether you can reliably accept service of process before designating yourself.
How to Designate Yourself
Include your name and Illinois physical address as the registered agent on your Articles of Organization when filing with the Illinois Secretary of State. No separate consent form is required under Illinois law.

Changing Your Registered Agent Later
If you decide to hire a professional registered agent, file a Statement of Change of Registered Agent and/or Registered Office with the Illinois Secretary of State. The filing fee is $25.00.
