How to Change Your LLC Name in Illinois

File an Amendment to your Articles of Organization with the Illinois Secretary of State, Department of Business Services. Your new name must include "Limited Liability Company," "LLC," or "L.L.C." and be distinguishable from existing registered entities under 805 ILCS 180/1-10. File online at https://apps.ilsos.gov/llcarticles/index.jsp or by mail to 501 S. Second St., Rm. 350, Springfield, IL 62756.

Before You File

Search the Illinois Secretary of State's business entity database at https://apps.ilsos.gov/businessentitysearch/ to confirm your desired name is available. Verify the name doesn't conflict with domestic or foreign LLCs, corporations, assumed names, or reserved names already on file.

Your new name cannot contain restricted words including Corporation, Corp., Inc., Bank, Banking, Trust, Insurance, or Limited Partnership without meeting specific statutory exceptions (805 ILCS 180/1-10; 205 ILCS 620/1-9; 205 ILCS 5/46).

Filing the Amendment

Submit your Amendment to Articles of Organization through the Secretary of State's online filing system or by mail to:

Springfield: 501 S. Second St., Rm. 350, Springfield, IL 62756
Chicago: 69 W. Washington St., Ste. 1240, Chicago, IL 60602

You may also reserve your desired name for 90 days ($25.00 fee) before filing if you need additional time.

Contact the Department of Business Services at (217) 524-8008 for current filing fees and processing timelines.

After Approval

Once your amendment is approved, update your assumed name (DBA) registration if you operate under a name different from your LLC's legal name. File an assumed name amendment with the Illinois Secretary of State ($120.00 filing fee).

Update your business licenses, employer identification number (EIN) records, bank accounts, and any contracts or agreements that reference your old LLC name.
