How Do I Change My LLC Name in North Carolina?

File an Articles of Amendment with the North Carolina Secretary of State, Business Registration Division. Your new name must include "Limited Liability Company," "L.L.C.," or "LLC" and be distinguishable from all other names on file under N.C.G.S. § 55D-20. Submit online at https://www.sosnc.gov/online_filing/filing/creation or by mail to PO Box 29622, Raleigh, NC 27626-0622.

Name Requirements

Your new LLC name must comply with North Carolina naming rules. The name must:

  • Include the required designator: "Limited Liability Company," "L.L.C.," or "LLC"
  • Be distinguishable upon the Secretary of State's records from all other registered or reserved business names
  • Avoid restricted words—Bank, Trust, Insurance, professional terms requiring board approval, or words implying unauthorized government affiliation—unless you obtain prior written approval

Search the business database at https://www.sosnc.gov/online_services/search/by_title/search_Business_Registration to confirm your desired name is available before filing.

Filing Process

Submit your Articles of Amendment through the Secretary of State's online filing system or by mail. Include your LLC's current registration information and the required filing fee. The Secretary of State will process your amendment and issue an amended certificate of formation.

DBA Filing

If you operate under a doing-business-as (DBA) name, file a separate assumed-business-name registration with the Register of Deeds in each county where you conduct business and with North Carolina's statewide assumed-business-name database. Update your DBA to reflect your new LLC legal name.
